Неправительственное агентство, добровольцы которого оказывают помощь больным и раненым во время войн и стихийных бедствий. Основано в 1881 как Американское общество Красного Креста [American Red Cross] К. Бартон [Barton, Clara]. Впервые активно проявило себя во время испано-американской войны [Spanish-American War]. С 1893 - современное название. Официально признано Конгрессом [Congress, U.S.] в 1900. Учредило банки крови, многие программы помощи в мирное время. Около 2,8 тыс. отделений. Штаб-квартира в г. Вашингтоне (Здания и музей Красного Креста - столичные достопримечательности)
